Irrigation schedule of pineapple in Ciego de Ávila province

Abstract
Based on the available information on the behavior of the water requirements of the pineapple crop in the different stages of development and the crop coefficients of this crop that have been studied, the parameters for irrigation scheduling in the predominant edaphoclimatic conditions in the province of Ciego de Avila are determined. The calculations are made using the methodology proposed by FAO based on the reference evapotranspiration, which has been calculated by the Institute of Meteorology according to the Penman-Monteith equation adjusted for the specific conditions of the meteorological stations in Cuba. The calculations are made for the three predominant soil types in the areas dedicated to pineapple cultivation in Ciego de Avila. The results show that there is no need for irrigation during the months included in the rainy period of the year, while during the rest of the year the irrigation frequencies range between 6 and 10 days and the irrigation norms between 7 and 15 mm according to the type of soil and stage of development, and irrigation should be handled with care to avoid undesirable over-wetting for this crop.
